Key Stage 2

🧮 Mathematics

Develop strong number fluency, reasoning, and problem-solving through a clear and progressive Key Stage 2 mathematics pathway.

Overview

Primary Mathematics builds confidence with number and operations while developing flexible thinking. Pupils learn to explain methods, choose strategies, and apply maths to everyday and multi-step problems.

The course balances fluency, reasoning, and application across arithmetic, geometry, measurement, and data. Learning is sequenced to ensure secure understanding before moving to more complex concepts.

What Students Study

Number and Arithmetic

Children build secure understanding of place value and the four operations, with emphasis on accuracy and mental strategies.

  • Place value across whole numbers and decimals
  • Addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division methods
  • Fractions, decimals, and percentages foundations

Reasoning and Problem Solving

Pupils apply mathematical ideas to unfamiliar questions and explain their thinking clearly.

  • Multi-step word problems
  • Pattern spotting and mathematical generalisation
  • Comparing methods and justifying answers

Geometry, Measurement and Data

Learners interpret shape, space, measure, and data in practical and real-world contexts.

  • Properties of 2D and 3D shapes
  • Time, length, mass, capacity, and area
  • Reading and creating charts and tables

Assessment & Progress

Assessment combines regular practice checks with topic review tasks to monitor confidence and mastery.

  • Short fluency and arithmetic checks
  • Reasoning-focused end-of-topic activities
  • Feedback-driven revision and consolidation
