The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Sociology is a linear qualification that introduces students to sociological concepts, theories, and research methods. Students explore how social institutions and cultural forces shape individual lives and group behaviour.

The Pearson Edexcel International GCSE in Sociology introduces students to the study of society and social behaviour. Students explore how institutions such as the family, school, and media shape who we are, and develop skills in evaluating sociological research and applying theoretical perspectives to real-world issues.

  • Crime and deviance: explanations and the criminal justice system
  • Culture, identity, and socialisation

  • Social inequality: class, gender, ethnicity, and age

Paper 1: Families, Schools and Crime and Deviance

Externally assessed written examination — 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of the total IGCSE. Covers sociological study of the family, education, and crime and deviance, including key theories, research studies, and sociological perspectives.

Paper 2: Culture, Media, Social Inequality and Global Development

Externally assessed written examination — 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of the total IGCSE. Covers culture and identity, the role of media, patterns of social inequality, and issues in global development.

Course Details

Assessment

100% external assessment covered by two written examinations. Paper 1: Families, Schools and Crime and Deviance — 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of the total IGCSE. Paper 2: Culture, Media, Social Inequality and the Global Development — 1 hour 45 minutes, 50% of the total IGCSE. All papers must be taken at the end of the course of study.

Course Duration

The IGCSE Sociology is a two-year programme. During those two years, students have access to live online classes, academic mentor support, and one-to-one subject support.

Course Outcome

International GCSE qualifications enable successful progression onto International A Level and beyond. Upon completing the course, students will achieve a Pearson Edexcel qualification, providing that all examinations have been completed and passed.

Entry Requirements

Students whose English is not their first language are required to either sit an internal English assessment or provide an English certificate at a minimum level B2 in all components. Two years of previous school reports are required.
