Overview
A Level Russian develops advanced linguistic competence alongside a deep understanding of Russian culture, literature, film and society. Students build the accuracy, fluency and analytical skills needed for university-level study in languages, international relations and related disciplines.

Advanced Grammar and Linguistic Accuracy
Students develop systematic command of Russian grammar, working through complex structures, case usage and verb aspects in authentic contexts to build the precision needed at A Level and beyond.

Russian Literature, Film and Cultural Context

Critical Analysis and Essay Writing

Topical Issues in Russian Society
Students explore contemporary and historical topics in Russian society, politics and culture, developing the independent research skills and discursive vocabulary needed for the speaking examination.

Assessment & Progress
The school follows the Pearson Edexcel A Level Russian specification. This qualification is assessed through written and oral examination across three papers. Students prepare through weekly language practice tasks, structured essay and oral work, termly assessments, and full mock exams with written feedback.

Course Details
Assessment
- Assessment covers all four language skills: listening, reading, writing and speaking.
- Written papers are sat at an approved Pearson Edexcel International A Level centre in May or June.
- The speaking component is conducted with a teacher and submitted for external moderation.
- Grades are awarded on a scale from A* to E.
Course Duration
The International A Level course runs over two academic years (Years 12 and 13). Students have continuous access to live online lessons, one-to-one subject support, and learning resources throughout the programme.
Course Outcome
Students who successfully complete all required examinations are awarded the Pearson Edexcel International A Level qualification. This is recognised by universities and higher education institutions worldwide as equivalent to UK A Levels.
Entry Requirements
- Five or more International GCSE grades at C/4 or above (or equivalent)
- Grade B/6 or above at IGCSE level in the target language, or demonstrated equivalent proficiency
- A pass in an internal language assessment completed prior to enrolment
- Students whose English is not their first language must provide a language certificate showing a minimum B2 level in all components, or sit an internal English assessment
- Two years of previous school reports are required
