EPQ Course

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)

The EPQ is a standalone qualification that develops the independent research and writing skills universities look for, completed entirely online alongside your other studies.

Extended Project Qualification (EPQ)
Benefits of EPQ

Why choose the EPQ?

The EPQ allows students to explore a subject in depth, build independent research skills and complete a substantial final project. It is a core part of our Sixth Form programme and can be taken as a standalone qualification or alongside other subjects, with small live classes, clear structure and ongoing teacher support. Over 60% of students achieve an A*.

  • Independent research and project management skills
  • Academic writing and critical thinking ability
  • Confidence in presenting and defending ideas
  • A formal qualification valued by top UK universities
  • Deeper subject knowledge in a self-chosen area

Who does an EPQ benefit?

The EPQ is a compulsory programme for all full-time A Level students at Oxford Online School. It is also open to students who wish to enrol solely for the EPQ, making it ideal for:

  • University-bound students who want to strengthen their personal statement and stand out in applications.
  • Learners eager to explore niche areas of interest.
  • Students preparing for research-intensive disciplines, including medicine, law, politics, or engineering.
  • External A Level students who wish to benefit from expert EPQ guidance and assessment support.‌‍‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‍‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‍‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‍‌‌‍‌‌‌‌‍‌‍‌‍‍‌‌‌‌‌‍‍‌‌‍‌‍‍‍‍‌‌
Understanding EPQ

What makes an EPQ different to an A Level or BTEC?

Unlike A Levels or BTECs, the EPQ gives students more control. They choose their topic, shape their project and manage it from start to finish, building skills in independent research, time management and problem-solving.

You choose the topic, you lead the work

Unlike A Levels or BTECs, the EPQ puts students in charge. They choose their own topic, shape their project and manage it from start to finish, building skills in independent research, time management and academic thinking that go well beyond a standard exam subject.

Ownership at every stage

The EPQ is unique because students drive the entire process themselves, developing initiative, self-discipline and the ability to construct original arguments. Students are supported throughout with one-to-one mentoring, research and workshops.

Stand out on university applications

Completing the EPQ helps students stand out on university applications, earning up to 28 UCAS points. It demonstrates a genuine commitment to independent study and gives students the chance to explore a subject in far more depth than the A Level syllabus allows.

Assessments

What to expect from the EPQ assessment

The EPQ is assessed on both the process and the final outcome. Examiners look at the skills you develop throughout, not just what you produce at the end. You will be assessed across four areas.

How you plan and manage your project

Assessors look at how clearly you structure your project from the start, how well you manage your time and how consistently you track your own progress throughout the year.

How you find and use evidence

You will be assessed on your ability to gather information from a range of credible sources, think critically about what you find and use evidence selectively to build a well-supported argument.

How you think and adapt along the way

Assessors want to see the reasoning behind your choices. Whether you are producing a dissertation, an artefact or a performance, they will look for evidence of critical thinking and the ability to adapt your approach as the project develops.

How you reflect and present your work

The final stage involves presenting your project and responding to questions. Assessors look for honest self-reflection, a clear evaluation of what worked and what did not, and the confidence to discuss your work openly.
